The artist:

Bénédicte Gerin was born in the United States and shares her time between Parisian and Majorcan studios.

Inspired by Mediterranean nature and countries of her childhood, between Asia and the Middle East, where alphabets meet, she explores colour, depth and light in a body of work where writing and gesture are inextricably linked.

Her artistic practice is closely linked to her passion for calligraphy, the study of which, thirty years ago, led her towards abstraction, that mental space where her own gestures, shaped by the ductus, transcend the exaltation of colour.

The art work:

Bénédicte Gerin’s work is based on gesture. The gesture born of formative years, shaped by the ductus, rooted by years of calligraphic practice. Then there is the artistic gesture, the creative intention, the choice and determination of what the artist will place on her canvas.

Finally comes the painted gesture, the one from which it is necessary to extract oneself, to let go, so that the magic of the right line operates, of the gestural dazzle sublimated by the exaltation of color and the vibrancy of pigments.

In this series, the artist has painted powerfully coloured backgrounds that stem from her world, where gesture always reinvents writing, stroke, rhythm, in search of dynamic graphics…

The vibrant and exhilarating colors vibrate and resonate physically in the viewer’s eye.
